We had some questions for Emily, and we hope you enjoy getting to know her a bit!
Your favorite virtue:
I would have to say my favorite virtue is kindness. The people I know who exemplify this virtue always stand out in my memory.
Your chief characteristic:
I tend to be very empathetic...to a fault. I very easily feel and take on other people’s emotions.
What you appreciate most in your friends:
I love when my friends feel they can really be themselves around me and don’t feel the need to put on a face.
If not yourself, who would you be?:
I would love to be Joan Baez - her era, talent, lifestyle - I would love a taste of her life.
Your favorite heroes in fiction:
Probably Gandalf, or Harry Potter, or the Doctor. Nerd at heart.
Your favorite heroes in real life:
As typical as it may be, I would have to say my mom. Her artistic spirit and her sacrificial love are qualities I strive for. Also, my husband’s grandmother. Both my grandmas died when I was young so she’s really the only grandma I know. Pretty much everyone who has met Mildred has been blessed by her kindness and joy.
Favorite food and drink:
I like any kind of potatoes, besides raw or rotten. And pizza, always pizza. I’d wash it all down with some hand-crafted root beer.
The natural talent I'd like to be gifted with:
I would love to have a good singing voice. I’d choose a real soul voice like Eva Cassidy or Nina Simone
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?:
I could see myself with a couple kids, living on some piece of land somewhere remote, cooking a lot of good food, and enjoying a lot of peaceful porch time. Or maybe I’ll just be living in a van down by the river.
What's the scariest thing you've ever done?:
I’m a pianist and growing up, every year I would have to perform for juries and competitions. I get really horrible stage fright and would pretty much always feel like I was going to be sick and I usually messed up a lot.
What has been the proudest moment in your life?:
This may be an odd one to pick, because It wasn’t a huge life event. But when I was at UCLA I was blessed to be in the Choir. At the end of the year we got to perform in the legendary Royce Hall. Singing that last Amen Chorus with 200 people with all my might, I felt pretty invincible.
How I wish to die:
I hope I die like Enoch. “Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.” - Genesis 5:24
Your favorite motto:
To bring it all back to my nerdiness, a quote that continually comes back to be is when Gandalf is explaining to Frodo that we can’t decide or understand the times and circumstances we were placed in, but he says, “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.” And of course Frodo chooses to take the hard path and saves Middle Earth.
What is your present state of mind:
I am now questioning my entire life’s goals and dreams based on this questionnaire.
