Family Worship Sunday At Thousand Oaks

Hey there (AKA Heyo!) I hope you are doing well today! I’m writing to share about a little thing we’re going to try in 2015, that I’m looking forward to as a part of our family culture at Anthem TO.

We are going to use the 5th Sundays (4 total in 2015) to hold family worship services. Meaning, we are going to invite the kids, ages 4+ to join us in the worship service for the morning. We will sing together, take communion together, hear teaching from God’s word together, baptize together, dedicate kids together and ultimately, grow together as families!

The first one of these will happen on March 29th. Our hope is that our families will come together with full awareness and intentionality, so I wanted to encourage you with a couple ideas for how to take full advantage of a day like this. In writing, most of these are from personal experience… So, take them as lessons being learned :)

1. PREP YOUR KIDS

It can be as simple as a moment before you walk out the door and it can be as complex as making a weekend out of it, praying together, reading Scripture together and making the church gathering the culmination of your family weekend of worship. If the kids show up thinking that they’ll be going to Anthem Kids, it might be tough for them to make the on the fly adjustment to being in a different location.

2. INVITE YOUR KIDS TO BE INVOLVED

Trust me, I know how much easier it is to hand them the phone. I do this. Frequently. But… These family worship Sundays are an opportunity to see your kids grow in their love for Jesus, his church, worship and communion. It’s an opportunity for them to get a taste of life in the big, multi-generational, family of God!

3. PREPARE YOURSELF

I realize how coveted a few hours without the kids can be in our culture. My hope is that you would see (and discipline yourself) to enjoy the day and it’s possibilities. Prepare your heart to worship with your kids. Ask God for patience to encourage your kids with a day like this. This is kind of therapeutic writing this stuff out… it’s kind of like you’re reading my journal!

4. MAKE A DAY OUT OF IT

Plan on hanging around after, grab a few families and make a plan for brunch or lunch in the park!

5. GET BAPTIZED

Have you expressed your faith through the public declaration that we know as baptism? What better way to demonstrate your faith to your kids and to all the kids at Anthem? Let us know if you’d like to be baptized and we can work on the details together!

6. DEDICATE YOUR KIDS

One of our family moments as a church is to join a family in the dedication of their children. This is something that we do, probably more for the parents than for the child but it’s an opportunity to present the family before God in commitment to raise children in Christ.

The bottom line is that we are looking forward to being together in a few weeks! Let us know if you have any questions and, especially for our first one, we will explain things as we go through them on that Sunday!
