Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. (1 John 2:15-17 ESV)
The love of the world is a concept that is not reconcilable with the Gospel, there is a critical moment in a believer’s life where he/she must decide what to do with the world. Will you develop a pattern of love for the world and things of the world? Or a lifestyle and pattern of love of God? We ultimately will have to ask ourselves regularly which is better?
- How do you decide if you love the world too much? I mean am I allowed to love snickers, my job, my home, baseball glove?
- What do you think some of the root beliefs might be when we love the things of the world?
- What is the solution to love of the world?
- Are there helpful disciplines that you need to build in your life to safeguard your heart from loving the things of the world? (community, confession, accountability with money etc.)
