Our Creative God
One of the very first attributes that we learn about God in Scripture, is that he is the Creator. In the blink of an eye, He created the heavens and the earth, soil and water, rocks and all living things. He created every color that we use to paint, and every particle of light we capture on every frame of video. But he saved his greatest work for last. Genesis 1:26-27 God says, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness… So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”
We As Creative
God created us in his “likeness.” One of the most powerful attributes that God gave to us as people was the capacity to create. Over time we have created everything from the most fashion-forward fig leaves in history, incredible structures, epic stories, and a multitude of musical instruments, to HTML5, the iPhone 5 (I’m biased), and an ability to make art out of foam on a cup of coffee. Now, granted, there are people who love to create. God has given them a fantastic mix of talents and gifts to be able to use paint, pixels, and photographs to create beautiful expressions of art. There are also people who, for lots of potential reasons, feel that they are not creative. If you feel you are part of that group, I would encourage you to challenge that thought! You were made in the image and likeness of the most creative God, and he delights in you becoming more and more like Him. Be creative in how you love your spouse. Be creative in how you show honor to one another. Be innovative at work. Be creative.
Anthem Creative
Here at Anthem, as we hope you can see and feel, we value creativity. If you would classify yourself as a “Creative,” we want you to feel welcome at either campus of Anthem Church. For a long time, the church was at the center of creative expression and creation, and for whatever reasons, we have lost it. Thankfully, there has recently begun a fantastic resurgence of creativity in the church. People are again recognizing that art can be a powerful tool in helping people find their way back to God. Every week, we use the gift of musical expression to worship God with our singing and our capacity and talents in playing musical instruments for his glory. We use storytelling to communicate what God is doing in and through the people who call Anthem their church body. We use graphic design to show people the heart behind what we’re talking about. And occasionally we use many other forms of artistic expression to worship the God who lived a perfect life, sacrificed himself on the cross, and has now given those who trust in him for salvation his full and complete righteousness. He is worthy of our worship, and we love worshipping him with our lives, and with each other on Sunday mornings.
If you would like to get involved with our Creative Team or would like to be involved with our Sunday Morning Worship Teams, we would love to talk to you about it. I would love to know how you’re interested in serving, the talents God has given you, and your heart for worshipping Jesus. Feel free to email me at ryan@anthemchurch.org if you have any questions or want to get involved.
